History

In 1609, John Smith explored the Upper Chesapeake Bay and the area that would one day become Queen Anne’s County. In 1631, the first English permanent settlement in the State of Maryland was established under a patent from the king by Captain William Claiborne. Queen Anne’s County, named after Queen Anne, was officially created until 1706 and formed partially from Kent and Talbot Counties. In 1760, the principle crops of the county switched from tobacco to grain. In 1782, the town of Centreville was named as the County seat of Queen Anne’s County. Ten years later, construction began on the Queen Anne’s County Courthouse and remains the oldest continuously used courthouse in Maryland.

In the mid 1800’s railroads brought with them numerous new settlers and expanded markets beyond the region, allowing for an economic boom. In 1869, the Sudlersville Train Station was built in Queen Anne’s County. Shortly following Queen Anne’s County’s economic boom, the Agricultural Depression hit in 1890, bringing with it such horrors as peach blight. In 1902, the Stevensville Train Station was built and the railroad was extended.

In 1936, the Kennard School, a secondary school for African Americans, is established. This was the first and only secondary school for African Americans established in the whole of Queen Anne’s County. In 1956, construction for the Bay Bridge begins.
